The African Mamas zijn terug met een nieuwe voorstelling. 'The Big Five' is een ode aan vijf bijzondere artiesten die de Zuid-Afrikaanse muziek internationaal in de schijnwerpers hebben gezet.
Allereerst natuurlijk Miriam Makeba, ook wel ‘Mama Africa’ genoemd, met wereldhits als ‘Pata Pata’, ‘Malaika’ en ‘The Click Song’. Brenda Fassie was de 'queen of Afropop' dankzij nummers als ‘Weekend Special’ en het emotionele ‘Too Late For Mama’. Ook na haar grote doorbraak als artiest bleef zij in de townships wonen. Bushi Mlongo schreef nummers over het dagelijks leven in Soweto en stond erom bekend meestal blootvoets het podium te betreden. Haar vaak scherpe teksten leidden tot een verbanning uit haar geboorteland, die ze deels in Nederland heeft doorgebracht. Hugh Masekela en het duo Letta Mbulu & Caiphus Semenya hebben eveneens grote impact gemaakt met hun onvergetelijke muziek.

The Big Five of South African Music
Miriam Makeba – "Mama Africa" brought South African music to the global stage with timeless hits like ‘Pata Pata’, ‘Malaika’ and The Click Song' She was hailed as "The Empress of African Song", "The Queen of South African Music", and Africa’s "First Superstar".
Brenda Fassie – Known as "The Queen of African Pop", "The Madonna of the Townships", and "The Black Madonna", Fassie captured hearts with hits like ‘Kuyoze Kuyovalwa’ and ‘Too Late for Mama’. Despite her fame, she remained deeply connected to life in South Africa’s townships.
Busi Mhlongo – A fearless artist who blended jazz, funk, rock, gospel, opera, and reggae with West African music. Her bold lyrics about everyday life in Soweto led to her exile, part of which she spent in the Netherlands.
Hugh Masekela – Dubbed "The Father of South African Jazz", Masekela was a Grammy-nominated musician behind classics like 'Stimela' (Coal Train) and ‘Bring Him Back Home’. His exiled career saw him collaborate with legends worldwide.
Letta Mbulu & Caiphus Semenya – This iconic duo left a lasting mark on global music with songs like ‘Nomalanga’ and ‘Not Yet Uhuru’. Semenya even worked with Michael Jackson, arranging the Swahili chant in 'Liberian Girl' (1987).
